THE LONE RIDER: The Complete Westerns
A total of 17 Westerns were made by PRC, a low-budget movie studio that produced a singing cowboy played by George Houston for the first 11 movies and Bob Livingston for the remaining 6 movies. Regrettably, the studio re-released the same movies under alternate titles causing not only confusion but chaos as people thought they were buying new Lone Rider movies on DVD and discovered after watching them that they bought a dupe under an alias title. We went to the trouble to ensure there are no dupes and that the set you get indeed has all 17 movies! This six-disc set contains all 17 movies! GEORGE WHITE'S 1935 SCANDALS
A vacationing Broadway producer, George White, stops off in a small Georgia town to send a telegram. He sees his name in lights on a local theater and is scandalized over the unauthorized use. He takes them to New York City, puts them in a new version of his Scandals and they are big hits. Their sudden fame causes a pair of lovers to forget their vows made in less-palmy days. Stars Alice Faye, James Dunne, Ned Sparks, Cliff Edwards, Benny Rubin, Eleanor Powell and (a young) Iris Meredith.

THE FLAME BARRIER  (1958)
Carol Dahlmann enlists the Hollister brothers to help locate her missing husband. The husband was tracking a fallen satellite through the jungle. While tracking him down, the trio discover an unusually strong acid killing animals and people. Stars Arthur Franz and Kathleen Crowley. One of the more difficult sci-fi movies to find from the 1950s.

MAN ON THE EIFFEL TOWER  (1949)
In Paris, a down and out medical student Johann Radek (Franchot Tone) is paid by Bill Kirby (Robert Hutton) to murder his wealthy aunt. A knife grinder (Burgess Meredith) is suspected, but Radek keeps taunting the police until they realize that he is the killer. The police and Maigret (Charles Laughton) are led on chases through the streets and over the rooftops of Paris and finally up the girders of the Eiffel Tower. Yeah, we know this movie is available all over the place. But guarantee this is the best picture quality you'll find or your money back! Guaranteed!

ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU  (1957)
One of the rare fifties' horror classics -- but better suited as part of a double feature for drive-in movies. Zombiefied sailors guard the treasure of a ship that went down with them 60 years earlier. A group of sailors scoff at the legend and decide to retrieve the diamonds from the ocean floor only to discover the hard way that there is some truth to legends. Cast includes Gregg Palmer and Allison Hayes.

WAGONS WESTWARD  (1940)
John Wayne was originally scheduled to play the lead but when the studio read the script, they chose Chester Morris to play two roles -- one good, one bad -- as twin brothers who are at loggerheads when one chooses a life of crime and one becomes a lawman. The young fieman has replaced another named Crow who was sacked for drinking on the job. So Crow plans to wreck the express on the driver's last trip. Originally made as a silent picture, sound was added in March of 1930 and was the second film to be released in England with sound. (Hitchcock's BLACKMAIL was the first.) A young Ray Milland stars in this and yes, this is the recent restoration that is not available in the U.S.!!! The spectacular train and special effects make this one worth watching.

WHAT'S COOKIN?  (1942)
You want Andrews Sisters? You got 'em! A group of entertainers visit the home of a radio singer to try to get her to book them on her show. The cast includes Donald O'Connor, Franklin Pangborn, Jane Frazee, Leo Carillo, Billie Burke and Woody Herman and his Orchestra.

SLEEP, MY LOVE  (1948)
Alison Courtland wakes up in the middle of the night on board a train, but she cannot remember how she got there. Danger and suspense ensue. A similar plot to GASLIGHT, but with a different cast. Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, Keye Luke, Robert Cummings and Raymond Burr star. This was also the one and only film produced by Mary Pickford under his Triangle Productions label. Which is a darn shame because this was a pretty good movie.

THE WEB  (1947)
A rarely-seen film noir. Leopold Kroner, formerly of Colby Enterprises, is released after five years in prison for embezzlement. Andrew Colby, claiming that Kroner has threatened him, hires lawyer Bob Regan as a secret bodyguard. Sure enough, Kroner turns up in Colby's room with a gun, and Regan kills him. Then Regan, who sticks around to romance Colby's secretary Noel, begins to suspect he's been used. Stars Edmond O'Brien, Ella Raines, Maria Palmer, William Bendix and Vincent Price.

IF I WERE KING  (1938)
Best described as the classic Hollywood movie that you will agree, "they don't make them like this anymore." In 1463, Paris is besieged by the Duke of Burgundy, arch-rival of the king, who is content to sit tight while the poor starve. But there are traitors in Paris, and King Louis goes undercover to find one, thereby meeting Francois Villon, poet, philosopher and rogue. By chance Villon kills the king's traitor and is ordered to replace him...as Grand Constable of France! But there's a catch... Stars Ronald Colman, Frances Dee and Basil Rathbone.

THE MYSTIC  (1925)
The Mystic involves a trio of Hungarian gypsies who travel Europe with little more than a magic sideshow. Aileen Pringle plays the title character, named Zara, who claims to have mystical powers. A man named Michael Nash, played by Conway Tearle, approaches them with an idea to come to the United States to make even more money by holding séances with rich people and tricking them into believing they're seeing the ghosts of their loved ones. When they arrive, however, the quartet's plans get a monkey wrench thrown into it, when Nash feels sorry for one of their potential victims. Directed by Tod Browning, this was considered for a long time to be a "lost" film. But we found a copy and it's worth watching if you are a fan of Tod Browning.

THE SOUTHERNER  (1945)
The life of the poor Tucker family that worked as cotton pluggers and decided to get their own ground, but nature was against them. Nominated for three Oscars, this movie was originally intended to star Joel McCrea, but when the studio couldn't get him they gave it to Zachary Scott. J. Carrol Naish, Beulah Bondi, Betty Field, Norman Lloyd and Percy Kilbride also appear in this film. This is the re-mastered version and not the crappy print that has been floating about for the past few decades!

THE GHOST TRAIN  (1931 version)
Long sought after because it featured scenes from the 1929 classic, THE WRECKER, this classic movie was considered "lost" until recently. Only five reels of picture and two reels of soundtrack survive, and have been put to DVD for the first and only time. Starring Jack Hulbert and Ann Todd. I know this is like saying LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT has been partially found, as most film buffs will doubt what we offer is on DVD but we're not joking!

I MARRIED A WITCH  (1942)
A beautiful 17th-Century witch returns to life to plague politician Wallace Wooley, a descendant of her persecutor. Veronica Lake and Fredric March did like one another and during the filming of this movie, Lake delighted in playing pranks on March, such as hiding a 40-pound weight under her costume so when March had to carry her in his arms, he had to ordeal more than he expected. Susan Hayward and Cecil Kellaway also stars.
By the way, if you enjoy Veronica Lake, you might enjoy this fascinating article.

Yes, there was a motion-picture before the TV series.

THE LITTLE FOXES  (1956 TV version)
Telecast on December 16, 1956, you can now watch Greer Garson, Franchot Tone, E.G. Marshall and Sidney Blackmer star in the Lillian Hellman stage play that became famous when Bette Davis starred in the movie version in 1941. This 90-minute telecast gave Greer Garson the opportunity to play the role she never got a chance to in Hollywood.

SONG AT MIDNIGHT  (1937)
This was the first Chinese sound "horror" film ever made. It's an interesting re-telling of the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with some cultural differences. The first half plays slow but stick with it because the second half of this 113 minute movie wonderfully crosses romance and horror.

THE WET PARADE  (1932)
The evils of alcohol before and during prohibition become evident as we see the effects it has on the rich Chilcote family. Rarely seen, this is a great little film with an impressive cast: Robert Young, Dorothy Jordan, Walter Huston, Lewis Stone, Wallace Ford, Myrna Loy and Jimmy Durante.

GUNSMOKE: Season Seven
This was the first season where GUNSMOKE was an hour-long format instead of 30 minutes. Broadcast from 1961 to 1962, the entire cast of the TV series agreed to the extended format as long as their salary doubled. CBS relented and the series was still a big hit. Includes such classics as "Chester's Indian," "Miss Kitty," "Chesterland," "Apprentice Doc," and "A Man A Day." Celebrity guest stars were common beginning with this season. This is a twelve disc set and includes every episode UNCUT and UNEDITED, with bonus material.  $50

This DVD includes the following episodes: The Long Wait, Date for Murder, Come Out Fighting and The Last Fight.

TENNESSEE TUXEDO: The Complete Series
Featuring the voice of the late Don Adams, this cartoon series of a penguin and his dim-witted pal Chumley was very popular. They always attempted to raise the quality of zoo life -- always at the frustration of the zookeeper. Their projects required the assistance of their educated friend, Phineas J. Whoopee and his 3-D BB (black board). This six DVD box set contains all 70 TENNESSEE TUXEDO cartoons plus additional cartoons of The Hunter and The King and Odie.  $30

Two classic Danish silent movies have been made available on DVD. In END OF THE WORLD (1916), a comet passing by the Earth causes rioting, social unrest and major disasters that destroy the world in this World War I era film. In A TRIP TO MARS (1918), in spite of indifference and after many troubles and years of hard work, the spaceship "Excelsior" is finally constructed and Captain Planetaro's trip to Mars goes from dream to reality. What he finds on Mars is extra ordinary.

QUO VADIS  (1951)
We only have a handful of these in stock so once sold out, there won't be any more available.
Stars Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr. A fierce Roman general becomes infatuated with a beautiful Christian hostage and begins questioning the tyrannical leadership of the despot Emporer Nero. Originally cast in 1949 with Elizabeth Taylor as Lygia and Gregory Peck as Marcus Vinicius. But as the production changed hands the following year, the roles were recast with Deborah Kerr and Robert Taylor. This was one of those epics that spans 2 DVD discs and featured over 30,000 extras for the making.

DARK COMMAND  (1940)
When transplanted Texan Bob Seton arrives in Lawrence, Kansas he finds much to like about the place, especially Mary McCloud, daughter of the local banker. Politics is in the air however. It's just prior to the civil war and there is already a sharp division in the Territory as to whether it will remain slave-free. When he gets the opportunity to run for marshal, Seton finds himself running against the respected local schoolteacher, William Cantrell. Not is what it seems however. While acting as the upstanding citizen in public, Cantrell is dangerously ambitious and is prepared to do anything to make his mark, and his fortune, on the Territory. When he loses the race for marshal, he forms a group of raiders who run guns into the territory and rob and terrorize settlers throughout the territory. Eventually donning Confederate uniforms, it is left to Seton and the good citizens of Lawrence to face Cantrell and his raiders in one final clash. Stars John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Gabby Hayes, Claire Trevor, Walter Pidgeon, Marjorie Main and many others. Wow!

Includes: For the Love of Money (pilot episode), Miracle Jones, The Big Fix and Judy, the Jinx.

FAVORITE STORY
This short-run television program ran only 39 episodes, hosted by Adolphe Menjou. The stories ranged from farce to tragedy, sometimes streading a delicate line between the two. The scripts were first-rate and the guests were often a surprise (such as seeing Raymond Burr playing a land-hungry Russian peasant in the first episode of the series, a little morality play adapted from Tolstoy). This 2-DVD set includes seven classic episodes transferred from 16mm masters. Titles include: City Hunter, The Lone Years, The Crime, The Magician, Sword of Vagabond, Vacant Room and Jeack of Hearts.

SEE MY LAWYER  (1945)
This movie marked the fourth and final appearance in a Universal movie by Olsen and Johnson. It is also the most difficult to find. The boys are up to their usual antics, first trying to break a contract with a nightclub owner with the help of a couple starving lawyers. Then they use the same lawyer to save them from a lawsuit from the man they bought the nght club from. The court soon becomes a three-ring circus.

RUMBLE ON THE DOCKS  (1956)
This is the kind of film that's fun to watch but will probably be completely forgotten about afterwards. This was also James Darren's first film. Darren plays a young man heading quickly down the wrong path, thrown out of his house and is taken under the wing of a big-shot waterfront hood. Darren soon becomes the muscle for the organization, but when he gets second thoughts, he finds himself on the qucik track to the morgue. There is also a young Robert Blake in the cast.

One of them is the killer. (No cheats, it really is one of the ten.) And you have to figure out who it is as each of the remaining nine get mysteriously killed and murdered on the secluded island. If you want to see a talent show worth laughing at, here's your chance!  $50
This title is available for this month only. It will not be available after April 1.

WOODSTOCK (1969)
This two-DVD set contains the entire 4-hour version of Woodstock, the 1969 concert that took place in Bethel, New York. While 2 1/2 hour movie offers us a glimpse, it doesn't reveal Jimi Hendrix on the stage, nor a large number of footage captured and never used. All of the unused footage from the 1969 is now included and boy, after you watch this you'll feel you lived through the concert itself! And great music, by the way!
This title is available for this month only. It will not be available after April 1.

THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH
This two-disc set contains everything you want from the short-run television series. All three hour-long episodes, the motion picture, the original studio openings and closings, a historical documentary (two of them, actually), and digitally remastered from the original archival prints. SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK  (1932)
This is one of the few Buster Keaton films not yet available on DVD. A dim-witted slumlord tries to reform a gang of urban boys (and impress an attractive young woman) by transforming their rough neighborhood into a more decent place. This was Keaton’s most commercially successful film to date, even though he made it under protest and didn’t understand why the studio would not allow him some creative genius.

HIGH WALL (1947)
After a brain-damaged man confesses to murder and is committed, Dr. Ann Lorrison tries to prove his innocence. Stars Robert Taylor, Herbert Marshall and Audrey Totter in this classic film noir. An accent on dark shadows and rainy streets gives it the proper noir atmosphere.

CRY TERROR  (1958)
Another great film noir, this one with James Mason, Rod Steiger, Inger Stevens, Neville Brand, Jack Klugman, Angie Dickinson and Kenneth Tobey. Historically, it was one of the earlier films that Stevens wanted to walk away from (she suffered depressions and wanted to commit suicide). While filming a scene in a subway tunnel, Inger Stevens and Rod Steiger were nearly asphyxiated by carbon monoxide fumes. Steiger said years later that when they were given oxygen, Stevens tries to refuse it. She said at the time she wanted to die; Steiger and the crew had to convince her otherwise.

THE CAPTAIN HATES THE SEA  (1934)
This was John Gilbert’s final screen appearance. His career was waning by the time he was hired by “poverty row” studio Columbia for this pictures. His lucrative contract option had been dropped by the larger and richer MGM Studio, because his voice had tested higher than suited his masculine screen image. The silent screen star had begun to drink heavily and thanks to his friend Lewis Milestone, was hired by Columbia for this picture… with the sole condition that he remain sober throughout production. Working with Walter Catlett and Victor McLaglen, however, made this a difficult time to handle and Gilbert stayed next to the bottle.

Available for this month only!

REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR  (1942)
This was, historically, the first fictional film dealing with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Republic Pictures raced against time to beat the other studios to the punch, and in order to accomplish this, they utilized Jack Natteford’s original story from Republic’s 1936, “The Marines Have Landed.” Is it historically accurate? Of course not. But it’s a fun WWII picture. Stars Don “Red” Barry in the lead.

FIVE FINGERS  (1952)
Based on a true story. In neutral Turkey during WWII, the ambitious and extremely efficient valet for the British ambassador tires of being a servant and forms a plan to promote himself to rich gentleman of leisure. His employer has many secret documents, and he photographs them, with the help of a refugee Countess, and plans to sell them to the Nazis. Nominated for two Oscars. Stars James Mason, Danielle Darrieux and Michael Rennie.

CRY DANGER (1951)
Rocky Mulloy, back in town after serving five years of a life sentence for armed robbery, hopes to clear his friend Danny Morgan who is still in prison for the same crime. It won’t be easy. Even the witness who cleared Rocky thinks he’s guilty. A sleazy wife, a cynical cop and a missing “hot” $100,000 will eventually surface before this film noir comes to an end. Stars Dick Powell, William Conrad and Rhonda Fleming.

WE’VE NEVER BEEN LICKED  (1943)

CITY STREETS  (1931)
Nan, a racketeer’s daughter, is in love with The Kid, a shooting gallery showman. Despite Nan’s prodding, The Kid has no ambitions about joining the rackets and making enough money to support Nan in the lifestyle she’s accustomed to. Her attitude changes after her father implicates her in a murder and she’s sent to prison. Stars Gary Cooper, Paul Lukas, Sylvia Sidney and William Boyd. This was Sylvia Sidney’s first motion picture. This is also one of a large handful of Paramount early talkies never released on VHS, DVD or shown on television in three decades!

BEAUTY PARLOR (1932)
This was formerly a “lost” film. Originally screened at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention this past September, it was a surprise to all of us that the film truly does exist. But don’t expect anything fancy from this Joyce Compton picture, produced by the low-budget Chesterfield Pictures, about… well, a beauty parlor. It’s clearly a pre-code when you hear the one-liners thrown about. Mischa Auer plays the supporting role of Herman Bauer.

GORILLA AT LARGE  (1954)  in 3-D!
At a carnival called the Garden of Evil, a man is found murdered and apparently by a gorilla that got loose from his cage. Cobb, Raymond Burr, Warren Stevens and Lee Marvin!  In 3-D with a complimentary pair of glasses!

IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE  (1954)  in 3-D!
A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert and only an amateur star-gazer and a schoolteacher suspect an alien influence when the local townsfolk began to act strange.  In 3-D with a complimentary pair of glasses!

THE LARK  (1957)
Stars Boris Karloff, Bruce Gordon, Michael Higgins and Julie Harris reprising their roles from the Broadway play that ran 229 performances in New York beginning in late 1955! Karloff was nominated for the 1956 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Drama for "The Lark" so now you can watch this rarely-seen and obscure film about the story of Joan of Arc, and the people who convincted and sentenced her to death.

ELLERY QUEEN: "DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU"  (1971)
This is the November 1971 made-for-television movie that served as a television pilot for the ELLERY QUEEN series. It never sold, but the second movie (which most people have) did succeed. This version stars Peter Lawford as Ellery Queen, Harry Morgan as Inspector Richard Queen, and Bob Hastings, E.G. Marshall and Stefanie Powers. A series of murders where the victims are killed in numerically descending ages puzzles Ellery, especially when the male victims were strangled with blue cords and the female victims were strangled with pink chords.

GENERAL SPANKY  (1936)

Two other shorts include "The Fargo Phantom" and "Coyote Canyon."

Tess gives shelter to the sister of a preacher, aware the young lady is pregnant. Then, she claims ownership of the baby so as to save the sister from disgrace. Dick Grady (Frederic March), once a Harvard football star and lawyer ten years before, is now a derelict. The female of the species is the "hostess" of the cantina, an American named Carlotta (Tallulah Bankhead). When she's introduced to Metcalfe she says she can't shake hands as both of hers are full of "the only things that matter": a wad of bills, a cigarette and a drink.
