The 1947 World Series brought in television's first mass audience. It was carried in New York, Philadelphia, Schenectady, and Washington, D.C., and was seen by an estimated 3.9 million people - 3.5 million of them in bars! The TV set over the corner bar was a first introduction to the new medium for many people, and it helped sell thousans of sets for the home.
After that, TV ownership was contagious. The first set on the block always brought in dozens of curious neighbors, who eventually went out and bought sets of their own. This trend is still common today. When a neighbor gets a satellite dish, the other neighbors want one too. When DVD (digital video discs) came into being five years ago, everyone held their breath.
